For the second year in a row we offered the “Ascend. Succeed. Change.” Scholarship. The criteria for academic support was a high achieving senior at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Scholarship committee focused on the attributes of academic resiliency, personal values, and a positive outlook for ones future. Raevin Shirley stood out among several applicants. Her essay response questions were very impressive. They detailed her community support. They also showed her compassion as a student-tutor.
Raevin Shirley is a member of the National Honor Society and was president of her NAACP Chapter. As a student-tutor she helped English Language Learner students succeed in Math and English classes. Raevin loves helping others in need. She volunteers her spare time at senior living facilities and the Special Olympics. She hopes to become an art therapist where she can use Art and Psychology to offer mental health services. Raevin has a 4.5 GPA, is in the top 5% of her class, and plans to attend Howard University in the fall semester!
